Being Safe When Playing Sports
Playing sports truly provides a lot of fun and excitement. However, getting hurt from it is not. Fortunately, it is quite easy to prevent sports-related injuries. With just a few simple precautions, you can stay in the game while steering away from the pain.
First, you need to wear protective gear. What gear you wear depends on the sport you are playing. For example, donning a helmet or headgear is necessary to protect your head from injury when playing full-contact sports such as football or hockey. You would also need such head-protection gear for baseball, biking, and inline skating. However, you do not need one if you play relatively risk-free sports such as tennis. In this case, what you need are the right kind of shoes to maintain your balance and grip on the ground. In many activities, you may also need to wear goggles, pads, mouth guards, and protective cups. In addition, before you start playing, you need to warm up and stretch. Doing so gradually strengthens and lengthens your muscle. Preparatory exercises also increase blood flow and muscle temperature. When your muscles are strengthened and stretched, you lessen the chances of sustaining injury.
To make playing sports safer for you, your team, and your opponent, you need to know and follow the rules of the game. Knowing what to do and what not to results in fewer injuries because you and the other players know what to expect from each other. Finally, do not play when you are injured, even if you are tempted to get right back in the game. Playing while you are hurt can result in an even worse injury, one that may take a long time to heal. Thus, your strained muscle, wounds, or bruises should have a chance to recover.
